Navigation in the Aquarium

Indoors Navigation has implemented a unique navigation system in one of the largest Russian oceanariums, the Primorsky Aquarium, located on Russky Island in Vladivostok.

The aim of the project was to create a convenient and modern system that would help visitors easily navigate the vast expanses of the exhibition, as well as provide the administration with movement analytics and the ability to quickly update information.

Project objectives

The Primorsky Aquarium is a multi—level exhibition complex with extensive exhibition areas, where it is difficult for visitors to navigate without additional tools. The main objective of Indoors Navigation was to create a system that would provide users with convenient access to information about each exhibit and area via mobile devices or interactive touch stands, minimizing the need to contact staff.

Implementation and technologies used

By implementing the project at the Primorsky Aquarium, we have combined several key solutions:

  1. Interactive map in the rack and mobile location: Visitors can use interactive touch stands that provide information about their current location and nearby objects. The system is also integrated with iBeacon, which allows users to receive notifications via the mobile app as they move around the facility.
  2. Shared database and web-based control panel: All information in the system is updated centrally via the web-based control panel. Administrators can simultaneously update information for both touch stands and the mobile application, which greatly simplifies the management and updating of data about exhibition areas.
  3. Easy to use via QR codes: Visitors do not need to download the app — just scan the QR code at the counter or next to the exhibits. As a result, a map opens in the browser indicating their current location and the possibility of building routes to the objects of interest.

Usage examples

  • Navigation through the exposition: Visitors can easily find the aquarium they are interested in and fill in the exhibit. The system plots a route on a map showing the shortest path, providing convenient navigation through all levels of the aquarium.
  • Alerts and notifications: The system of the Indoors Navigation Platform allows you to send push notifications to visitors, informing them about special events, new exhibitions or promotions, which makes the visit more interactive.
  • Analytics and management: The aquarium administration receives real-time data on the movements of visitors, which allows analyzing their behavior, improving the efficiency of the exposition and planning the future development of the complex.

The technical component

iBeacon technology is based on the use of beacons that send signals to users' devices, transmitting them relevant information about nearby exhibits and areas. The system works on both iOS and Android devices, providing a full range of features for easy orientation and interaction with the exposition.

In addition, the use of touch stands and a web-based control panel allows you to keep data up-to-date and quickly respond to changes in exposure.

Advantages for the Primorsky Aquarium

  • Improving the user experience: Visitors easily navigate the space and get all the necessary information without having to ask for help from staff.
  • Interactivity: The use of interactive touch stands and a mobile application makes visiting the aquarium more exciting and informative.
  • Management efficiency: The administration receives a tool for analyzing visitor behavior, which helps to further improve the operation of the exposition.

The mobile app

Using the mobile application, you can quickly navigate the space and easily find the expositions you are interested in. An interactive map will guide you through all the halls, showing the way and allowing you to learn more about the exhibits, animals and activity areas.

The app helps visitors plan their attendance at shows and events by providing up-to-date schedules and ticket information. The notification feature for upcoming events and promotions makes this app indispensable for anyone who wants to dive into the underwater world.

Conclusion

The implementation of the Indoors Navigation Platform at the Primorsky Aquarium on Russian Island has become a successful example of using modern technologies to improve the interaction of visitors with the exposition. The system combines the convenience of navigation, analytics and operational information management, which makes it an indispensable tool for large exhibition facilities.

There are also zoos, water parks, art galleries and other facilities where you need to walk from place to place and read the captions to what you are looking at. The navigation service is able to turn this process into a pleasure, which means…
