Interactive terminals at Russian Railways stations

The Directorate of Railway Stations (JV), together with Indoors Navigation, has introduced an additional service — interactive terminals with 3D maps at 15 Russian Railways stations.

A total of 43 touch tables were installed with the Infomat software, which is integrated with the geographic information system of the Indoors Navigation Platform (INP)

Goals and objectives of the project

The aim of this project is to improve train station navigation for passengers by offering intuitive, convenient and technological solutions for navigating public spaces, which has become especially important in large train stations with extensive infrastructure.

Description of solutions and functionality

Interactive tables provide passengers with three-dimensional maps of train stations with the ability to search and build routes to various objects: ticket offices, platforms, recreation areas, shops, etc. The terminals display the route to the selected point in real time, accompanied by animation, which makes navigation easy and understandable.

One of the features of the system is the mode for low-mobility groups of the population (MGN), which takes into account special routes through elevators, ramps and other devices. This ensures comfortable movement of passengers with limited mobility.

In addition, the system allows passengers to save the route to their mobile device by simply scanning the QR code, which makes the process even more convenient. Interactive tables are also used to display advertising and informational banners in standby mode, which opens up new opportunities for monetization of objects.

Technical architecture and administration

The system is based on the geographic information platform Indoors Navigation, which provides flexible options for content management. Station administrators can update information on terminals in real time, which ensures that the data is up-to-date for passengers. All changes are made through a centralized control panel, which simplifies the process of managing maps and routes at train stations.

Interactive terminals support 4K resolution, which ensures high detail of maps and objects at train stations. The built-in BLE beacons allow the system to accurately determine the location of passengers, and the powerful architecture of the terminals ensures their stable operation even in conditions of high passenger traffic.

Usage examples

  • Train station navigation: Passengers can easily find objects of interest to them, such as ticket offices, shops, and waiting areas. The system builds optimal routes based on people's movements and helps to avoid confusion in large public spaces.
  • Mode for passengers with limited mobility: Users can choose special routes that provide access to facilities via elevators and ramps, which simplifies movement for passengers with disabilities.
  • Integration with mobile devices After setting a route, passengers can scan a QR code and save the route to their mobile device to follow it as they move around the station.

Implementation results

The introduction of 43 interactive tables at 15 Russian Railways stations has significantly improved the quality of passenger service and increased their satisfaction. Touch tables have helped passengers reduce the time spent searching for the right objects, reduced the burden on station staff and increased the overall efficiency of the infrastructure.

Ivan Pugachev

Deputy Head of the Department of Implementation and Development of Information Systems and Technologies of the Directorate of Railway Stations — Branch of JSC Russian Railways

We always think about our passengers, try to improve the quality of service and increase their satisfaction with the services provided at the train stations. Some of the train stations have large public spaces, and it's very easy to get confused there. That is why we decided to install additional interactive terminals with 3D maps and a visual list of services offered.

Advantages of the solution

  • Convenience for passengers: Interactive tables greatly simplify navigation through complex objects, save time and ensure the comfort of movement around train stations.
  • Accessibility for groups with limited mobility: Special routes for MGN ensure the accessibility of all facilities and the convenience of their use.
  • Flexibility and scalability: The Indoors Navigation Platform makes it easy to add new facilities and functions to terminals, making it an ideal solution for train stations and other public spaces.

Conclusion

The introduction of interactive Indoors Navigation Platform tables at Russian Railways stations has become an important step towards digitalizing the infrastructure of transport facilities. This solution allows to increase the level of passenger service, improve the management of people flows and create new opportunities for monetization through advertising tools.

Navigation in train stations

Visitors will be able to explore the territory of the station in advance, understand where the platform they need is located, and during their visit they will be able to plot a route and follow it as in a navigator on a mobile device. The chance of missing the train will be significantly reduced.
