There are several approaches to determining the position in a room that determine 2D or 3D coordinates, which are later used by the AR navigation system.

Each of the following technologies has its strengths and weaknesses. 2D positioning systems (GPS, beacons, antennas that determine the angle of the Bluetooth signal, Apple Indoor Positioning) have high latency and low accuracy, and markers and visual recognition are difficult to scale and require constant user interaction.

GPS

In an open space, a GPS satellite signal with a positioning accuracy of up to 5-15 meters can be used to determine location. The accuracy depends on the number of available satellites, weather conditions, and more.

BLE Beacons

These are small Bluetooth signal emitters that are attached to walls in rooms at a distance of 10 meters. Depending on which beacons the mobile device receives signals from and their power, it calculates the location. The accuracy is 2-4 meters.

Apple Indoor Positioning

It uses the existing Wi-Fi infrastructure and provides indoor positioning with an accuracy of several meters by using radio frequency patterns of Wi-Fi access points. It does not work poorly in public spaces with a large number of Wi-Fi access points.

Visual recognition and SLAM systems

This technology allows you to create and update a map of the environment, while simultaneously tracking the user's location in it. A point cloud is created based on the image of the space, and based on it, the user's coordinates are determined. The area limit is 200 meters and only on modern mobile devices.

Markers (QR codes)

Placing markers on an object with an accurate location allows the mobile device to know exactly where the user is at the time of scanning the QR code. After reading the QR code, the user can walk a distance of about 50 meters with a deviation of 1 meter.

Directional Bluetooth antennas with detection of the angle of the received signal

They are mounted on the ceiling and allow you to track BLE beacons with an accuracy of up to a meter. The antennas measure the horizontal direction and vertical angle of the radio signal from the beacon. Such devices are more difficult to install with conventional BLE tags, since they are connected via an ethernet cable and require separate power supply (POE).

ARKit

Apple Indoor Positioning passively uses the existing Wi-Fi infrastructure and does not require the deployment of additional equipment.

ARCore

The Google VPS-based visual recognition system based on markers and QR codes ensures accurate determination of the origin.
